TURKEY FARMING – A NEW ERA IN POULTRY REARING

TURKEYS can be raised as either pets or commercially for business purpose.  But before the farmer can decide on whether to raise the Turkey on the former or latter,he/she must have good and reliable information on how these birds are raised.

Turkey farming though not very common in Zambia as compared to broilers or village chickens is one of the

most profitable farming ventures with very good returns if one is armed with the right knowledge on how to go about it. This farming business can be very profitable and rewarding if only it is done in the right way.

And this is the true and successful story of a Lavushimanda Turkey poultry farmer in Muchinga province who

has ventured in this business against all odds. This Turkey farmer confirmed as he narrated to this reporter in an exclusive interview that this business is three times more profitable than rearing of ordinary chickens.

Even if he is raising them on a small scale, Enos Kashili disclosed that he is able to get enough profits after selling the birds.

Mr. Kashili explained that just like free range chickens, Turkeys are easy to rear as they can be kept either as free range or even in an enclosure.

He said a farmer can decide to  make houses for them while  others can be left as free range because Turkeys spend most of their time on the ground but when it is time to sleep they fly up into trees.

"The good part about this type of poultry farming is that these birds can be reared on a large scale and on a small scale even at the backyard," Mr. Kashili explained.

He said Turkeys are easy to keep unlike other birds because they do not easily get diseases as well as feeding of the same birds  is not a big deal in a way that they can eat what the chickens are able to feed on.

Mr. Kashili further added that a Turkey is fully grown within the period of six months and be ready to be sold at the market.

He indicated that a fully grown turkey can fetch as much as K 500 locally which is four times the price of an ordinary chicken.

“People just come to buy from my small farm and sometimes we sell along the road some people buy for consumption while other buyers are new comers who wants to rear them as well, “he said.

He observed that Turkey meat is on high demand everywhere because of its pleasurable taste as compared to other birds and this is the reason why most people prefer it to chicken.

He has since advised other poultry farmers to diversify into Turkey poultry production and maximise on their profits.

Mr. Kashili said chicken rearing has become very competitive because everyone wants to venture into it hence

the need for farmers to venture into other poultry production that is not flooded but lucrative.
