Insurance companies have encouraged farmers in the country to embrace agriculture insurance as a risk transfer solution to build resilience among small holder farmers.
Speaking during the mulimi business clinic Marking the insurance week commemorations held under the theme insurance solutions in uncertain times, financial sector deepening FSD Zambia chief executive officer Lillian Chilongo stressed the need for small holder farmers to embrace agriculture insurance, which will build resilience to promote sustainable agriculture practices and protect crops against unpredictable events such as droughts and climate change.
Ms. Chilongo says insurance being a power tool for farmers to navigate the uncertainties of climate change and protect their investment, fosters a sustainable path for Zambia's agriculture.
She says with unpredictable weather pattern and climate challenges faced in the country which have affected Zambia's social and economic status, adapting to insurance will not only ensure cover of their crops and livestock, but will help prepare for every farming season and prevent disruption by climate change.
She also hailed this year's theme adding that it reflects reality and calls for collaboration on sustainable solutions which affect small holder farmers and help them build resilience.
And professional insurance representative Silenga Wakunyima highlighted the benefits of having crops and livestock insured with professional insurance adding that it ensures continuity of farming after damage and also promotes investment.
Mr. Wakunyima Notes that lack of insurance has led to stress and worry making one lose sleep and peace of mind.
Meanwhile Mulimi chief executive officer Zindaba hanzala who gave an overview of the program expressed delight on the initiative's growth and also urged farmers to take advantage of the insurance business week to engage with experts on the process and importance of insurance.
And professional insurance authority-PIA representative Lungowe Lukwesa says as a regulator, PIA will continue to ensure compliance among insurance companies in the country and also pledged to collaborate with the said companies in order to help safeguard properties of the general citizenry in various sectors.
